Älvrummet – Urban Development Overview

Gain valuable understanding of Gothenburg’s urban development strategy.

Älvrummet is an exhibition dedicated to the radical transformation of both river banks. It showcases the long-term process of creating Älvstaden (The RiverCity), one of the largest urban development projects in Scandinavia.
Gothenburg city centre will double in size by the year 2050 with 25,000 new apartments and 45,000 new workplaces. By connecting the city, embracing the water and reinforcing the centre, we are committed to creating an inclusive, green and dynamic inner city open to the world.

ÄLVRUMMET
Älvrummet is a visitor centre for the public and Älvstadens face outwards. Here you get an overall picture of the urban development plan for Älvstaden and which projects that have been completed. As a visitor, you can take part in lectures, events, guided tours, exhibitions of proposals and plans, as well as information about the ongoing urban development in Gothenburg’s inner city. The river room also serves as a natural arena for debates in urban development issues, and the model over central Gothenburg in the middle of the room shows the city now and in the future.

HISTORY
Älvrummet opened the doors for the first time in 2008, then on the Channel Square at Göteborgoperan. Gradually, Älvrummet became the obvious place for information and debates about urban development along the riverbanks.
At the end of 2017, the building permit at the Canal Square expired and Älvrummet was moved across the Göta river to Lindholmen Science Park, in Gothenburg’s most knowledge-intensive and expansive area. When Älvrummet re-opened in November 2017, the exhibition had become completely digital.
